LYNCHBURG, VA – The 2013 spring season started in style for the Randolph College men's tennis team as the WildCats blanked visiting Virginia Union University 9-0 in non-conference action from the Randolph Tennis Courts Wednesday.
Doubles worked out well for the WildCats, as they won all three flights, including an 8-0 whitewashing at No. 1 singles by Daniil Lyalko (Reisterstown, MD/Park School of Baltimore) and Dan Phung (Hanoi, Vietnam/International). Sophomores Hart Gillespie (Hurt, VA/Altavista) and Shaun Chopp (Williamsburg, VA/Hampton Roads Academy) also picked up a victory at No. 2 pairs, prevailing 8-5.
In singles action, Lyalko followed his doubles victory with an emphatic 6-2, 6-1 win, while Phung also earned his second triumph of the day at No. 2 singles with a 6-0, 6-3 win. Chopp was another double winner Wednesday, earning a No. 3 singles victory with a score of 6-1, 6-2. Gillespie chalked up a No. 5 singles win with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 score, and Zach Dales (Albuquerque, NM/Albuquerque) earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory as well.
Dales is having a fantastic season for the WildCats thus far, as the sophomore is 5-0 on the 2012-13 year, going 3-0 in dual matches. Phung has started the year 3-1, and is just one behind Dales for the all-time lead for wins in a career at Randolph with 13.
