WildCat Men’s Tennis Wins Tight Match Over Southern Virginia University 5-4

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Randolph College men's tennis team earned its first-ever victory over Southern Virginia University Thursday afternoon, earning a tight 5-4 non-conference win over the Knights in play from the Randolph Tennis Courts.

In doubles action, the WildCats (3-2) earned two crucial points going into singles play. Sophomore Daniil Lyalko (Reisterstown, MD/Park School of Baltimore) and Dan Phung (Hanoi, Vietnam) teamed at No. 1 doubles to earn a 8-2 victory, while sophomores Zach Dales (Albuquerque, NM/Albuquerque) and Shuan Chopp (Williamsburg, VA/Hampton Roads Academy) also captured an 8-3 No. 2 pairs win.

In singles play, the WildCats had to earn at least a split in the individual action to earn the match and that's just what they did. Lyalko picked up an easy straight set No. 1 win with scores of 6-1, 6-1, while Phung was also a double winner with a 6-2, 7-6 (4) win at No. 2 singles. Dales picked up the critical third win in No. 4 singles, earning a 6-2, 6-1 triumph to give the WildCats the win.

Andrew Angerbauer and Lancaster Brown were both double point winners for the Knights.

Randolph will return to the court on March 19 at 4 p.m., traveling to Hampden-Sydney College for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) tussle.
