LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Randolph College picked up a win at No. 1 doubles but came up just short in singles action in dropping an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match to Lynchburg College 8-1 Friday afternoon.
No. 1 doubles went the way of the WildCats (3-6/0-5 ODAC), as Daniil Lyalko (Reisterstown, Md./Park School of Baltimore) and Dan Phung (Hanoi, Vietnam) earned an 8-5 victory. LC earned the next two doubles' points to take a 2-1 lead going into singles.
In individual play, Lyalko picked a set at No. 1 singles earning a 2-6 victory, but dropped the next two frames to fall 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. Sophomore Shaun Chopp (Williamsburg, Va./Tidewater Roads Academy) shook off a 6-1 first set defeat at No. 3 singles to even the match at one set apiece with a 6-0 set two win. In the super tiebreaker, Chopp narrowly missed the victory by falling 10-6.
At No. 4 singles, Zach Dales (Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque) played well but fell in a tough 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) match. No. 5 singles also went three sets before falling, as Hart Gillespie (Hurt, Va./Altavista) battled to a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 match.
Randolph will take on the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College at 10 a.m. on the Randolph Tennis Courts in an ODAC match Saturday morning.
